This is a detailed picture of an arm of Marthasterias glacialis, the most common starfish in Mediterranean Sea. Starfishes locomotion is due to the hundreds of tube feet located on the ventral face of the starfish’s arms: they operate like hydraulic rams, and are able to develop power enough to force open the shells of bivalve mollusks for food
